Our first two generations of prototypes used lead acid batteries that needed significant maintenance.
In 2013 we upgraded our system to use a new lead-carbon battery from Axion Power International that offers a comparable discharge profile for acceleration and hill climbing with better dynamic charge acceptance.
Axion’s PbC® battery is a hybrid device that integrates the positive electrode of a lead-acid battery with the carbon-based negative electrode of a supercapacitor in the same cell. That integration of two very different technologies eliminates the principal failure mechanism of lead-acid batteries while significantly improving charge acceptance.
We have had no battery problems since we upgraded to Axion’s PbC batteries and our testing profile has included one round-trip visit to a customer in New Market, Iowa where we drove the truck non-stop for 10 hours in each direction, but arrived at both destinations with fully charged batteries.
